For our latest Virginia Backpacking trip we decided to mix things up and try a more unique "backpack" trip this December! Originally we had planned to leave from Dorey Park in Henrico and follow the Virginia Capital Trail for 12 miles to our overnight stay at the HI Richmond Hostel. As the date drew near and a rainy weather forecast became clear we opted to shorten our hike to 3.5 miles with a start from Maymont's Nature Center.
We hiked in the mist toward Texas Beach to connect with the North Bank Trail with the intent to follow it all the way to 2nd Street. We opted for a later start and early in the hike we donned our headlamps as it became dark. Along the way there were a few slips on the muddy trail and as we passed nearby Riverview Cemetery we made the decision to leave the trail, cross the cemetery, and finish the remainder of the hike along Richmond streets.
When we arrived at the hostel we quickly checked in and dropped our packs upstairs in our bunk room. There are several restaurants nearby along Grace Street and after a short discussion we headed to Secret Sandwich Society for a delicious dinner including loaded Pimento cheese fries. Yum!!! On the way back we caught a quick glimpse of a dinner performance as we passed by Godfreys.
Back at the hostel we sat down at a table in the kitchen for a couple of card games then called it a night. The hostel had a great selection of board games to choose from as well.
I cannot state enough how much we loved the interior of the hostel. There were comfy couches, rustic decor, and a billiard table to continue our conversations the next morning. We also enjoyed some hot coffee before heading back to Maymont. In the daylight we were able to enjoy a few of the large murals you can find throughout Richmond. We capped it all off with a delicious brunch at Kitchen 64.
